There is an idea in postmodernist and contemporary theories of the self that suggests that we can see others and ourselves as a construct of the ideologically motivated discourses of power in society.
There is a certain degree of common sense logic to the idea that society imposes the discourses that is the conventions, language, codes and other forms of representation that we need to adopt if we are to fit in. Butler points out that anyone who has been in a sports team, let alone the type of school I attended 50 years ago, will understand this point and he coins the wonderful phrase “discourses put you in your place”.
This Project is about how we can PLAY WITH THIS NOTION using
- PROPS / COSTUMES / LANGUAGE / PHOTOGRAPHY / IMAGES that can be employed to say something about you, your role in the group, our sense of being part of something as we make a series of ‘selfies’.
- How political can the image be? How questioning? How funny? What story can an image and some words tell?
- Think about what can't be shown in a photograph. Is there something about you, you wish people would see when looking at pictures of you? Is there something you would want to hide?

*sorry for the backward writing. ARGH!
Its quite funny the reactions that some people have when they find out i like rock music, or that i hardly listen to island music. The comments 'you're not a real samoan' or 'why are you listening to white music' are made. As if polynesians could listen to only one type of music genre. Its stupid to stereotype a culture with taste in music, or with whatever the interest may be. I can listen to whatever i want to listen to. :)
